Make contact a team effort

In families, many hands can make for light work. For someone in assisted living or memory care, there is both a strong need for contact, and additional challenges. It falls to family and loved ones to make an extra effort. Too often this responsibility seems to fall on one person's shoulders. Keeping in touch with loved ones should be a joyful thing, but that does not mean it is easy. Reach out and get help.

Have a conversation among family about how each person can best participate. You want to get specific commitments from everyone about what they will do and how often they will do it. Getting back in touch regularly with each other will help everyone live up to their commitments. The goal should be to help one another to make keeping in contact as easy and joyful as possible.

Facebook groups are a good way to coordinate efforts, but some family members may be uncomfortable with social media. Part of taking a leadership roll in such an effort is to make sure everyone stays informed about the group's efforts. By working together, you can enrich both the life of your beloved family member but also your own, even in trying times like these.
